62 Storey Pencil Thin Skyscraper In Downtown Toronto

Toronto's blend of old and new comes together as a proposal for a tall, pencil-thin skyscraper gains support from heritage planners.

The proposed skyscraper, designed by Alliance and spearheaded by SmartCentre REIT, will rise 62 stories and feature a minimalist design with a three-story glass section in the middle of the building.

The proposal involves demolishing and partially retaining existing buildings from the late 1800s at 49 through 51 Yonge Street which has garnered both attention and controversy. Concerns about the potential loss of architectural integrity with its limiting area and the erasure of links to the city’s cultural roots have fueled apprehension and resistance to the development. There is also criticism behind the potential displacement of established businesses in the area due to the drastic alteration of Toronto’s historic streetscape. In response, the project aims to incorporate the preserved heritage buildings into the tower’s podium, with minor alterations to their exterior walls.

SmartCentre REIT’s proposal has now been put under heavy consideration by heritage planners who are currently looking for approval in the ongoing provincial appeals process. The building is currently occupied by the restaurant “The Irish Embassy Pub & Grill”, which will be displaced by the development if it comes back approved.
