Canada Goose Donates $35 Million For Massive AGO Expansion
In a groundbreaking move, Canada Goose chairman and CEO, Dani Reiss contributed $35 million to the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) for massive expansion. The AGO has now unveiled plans to expand its gallery space by 40,000 square feet, featuring at least 13 new galleries across five floors, leading to a 30% increase in the total space dedicated to displaying art. Collaborating with architectural partners Diamond Schmitt, Selldorf Architects, and Two Row Architect, the AGO introduces the initial designs for the Dani Reiss Modern and Contemporary Gallery, set to transform the artistic landscape in Toronto.
This visionary expansion, situated one storey above the AGO's existing loading dock between the gallery and OCAD University, will significantly enhance gallery space for an expanding collection of modern and contemporary art. The Dani Reiss Modern and Contemporary Gallery is not merely an expansion project; it symbolizes the AGO's commitment to uniting people with art and fostering global conversations.
The interior of the new expansion is expected to house 13 exhibition spaces, varying in scale and ceiling height. Prioritizing flexibility and adaptability, these spaces are designed to meet the evolving needs of future generations of artists working across all media. Notably, the AGO emphasizes sustainability, with the gallery designed to operate without burning fossil fuel. The all-electric mechanical plant aims for operational carbon neutrality, seeking CAGBC Zero Carbon Operating Building certification. Additionally, it will adhere to Passive House standards for maximum heating and cooling efficiency.
Crucially, the Dani Reiss Modern and Contemporary Gallery's design was crafted in consultation with Indigenous leaders and communities, led by Two Row Architect, ensuring a respectful and inclusive approach. This ambitious project represents a combination of philanthropy, art, and sustainable architecture, poised to redefine the cultural landscape of Toronto and inspire conversations on a global scale.
